MERIVALE v SOUTHBRIDGE.

A match was played at the Merivale Club's ground on Saturday last between these Clubs, which resulted in a win for Merivale by five events to three, "or ten sets to seven. Play commenced at 1L45, and at the luncheon adjournment Southbridge had won both combined doubles and one of the men's singles, but after lunch fortune favored Merivale, and that Club won all the events played during the afternoon. The individual play calls for little comment, the most noticeable, however were Mrs Humphreys with Miss Edwards, and Messrs Thomas and Fisher with Mr Whitehouse and Dr. Withers, the representatives of the local Club winning in each case. Mr Whitehouse was altogether too many for Mr Fisher in the men' singles, while Mr Thomas beat Dr. Withers without much effort. Mr Whitehouse and Miss Edwards were not called upon to exert themselves in order to beat Mr Fisher and Mrs Humphreys ; but Mr Pearce and Miss Rutherford had all their work cut out to defeat Mr Webb and Miss Lamb. Mr H. Meares and Mr E. R. Webb beat Mr A. Lean and Mr Willis very easily, the Southbridge players not seeming to shape into their places at all. During the afternoon there was a large number of spectators present, especially ladies. Afternoon tea was provided by a lady member, and discussed by the guests underneath pretty little umbrella tents and at small garden tables scattered about the grounds. The visiting players left for home shortly after five o'clock, after having spent a pleasant day. Subjoined are the scores of various events:— COMBINED DOUBLES.
