At the meeting of the South Canterbury .Board of Education yesterday, the' Chairman stated that since last, meeting Mr '-Born, master of the 'Hilton School, and "Miss' Ostler, mistress of the Upper Waitohi School, had resigned. The summary of attendance for December quarter showed ah .improvement of 329 upon the 'total for, the September quarter, whic)i "was very gratifying., The arcMtect,reported on various repairs and extensions for, by. Committees. Glen&vy School would, be finished in three weeks. The class room at South' Orari was in hand. The repairs at Tern ukahad beeticqmpleted. Wasadyke required; a class rdotn,' arid the ■best, way to provide it would be tq extend the schoolroom. Certain. repairs to rool Of Pleasant Point School were recommended. Orari Bridge School fraA too small by 100.square,.feet for the pupu&on the roll. The Committee wanted -k- class 'room, and suggested a lean-to, but: he did-not approve this. Some damage had been done at Totara. Valley School by a .whirlwind. The iron;was stripped off the 'roof, and the closet lifted over a fepcfrand smashed to pieces. Eepairs to the Timaru i Main Schoolbave beeu completed. -''The PSecretary reported that there was , , oniy ; about £400 of building fund nnailocatefd, 'and some of this, is needed .'for nishing Glenavy arid South OrarL Mr Barclay proposed to vote moneys -for some of the new works. Mr Talfedt proposed to postpone new buildings for Che present until' they saw. where ithey were to get building funds, and go >otx with necessary repairs. Mr Poweff said they must have fauds , somehow,'by being given rating powers . Jttarcl&y remarked that many of tile buildings were about to tumble to pieces for .want of paint;'and it was ordered; that 1 .tenders : -be called ?for repairs Plesteaot Point and Totara Valley'; alsOj: ja [Committee, consisting of the Chairman, L Messrs Barclay, Talbot, and Pearpoint report at their earliest convenience on the most urgent cases requiring painting, and also on the additions suggested at Orari bridge and Washdyke. Mr P. Hedly and Mr W. Balfour waited upon the Board in support of a petitition praying for the . establishment of a, school in the neighbourhood of Seadown. A site had been selected on Mr S. Cain's land, halfway between Washdyke and Temuka,' on tue main road. There were sisty-four cbUdren between five and four'teenl years of''age, and thirty-nine under five in the neighbourhood, and the inhabitants bad already subscribed £4$ towards the cost of setting up a school. Mr Cain would sell a site of three acres for between £20 and £30.. It -was resolved that the Inspector re port, on the application as usual at his ear- . liest.: convenience. The Timaru Committee forwarded a resolution and memoranda regarding the supervision of the school by the Head Master. A minute of the Board of May, 1881, turned up by the Secretary, showed that the Board then approved of such supervision. .'lMb having been read, Mr Talbot moved the motipn standintc in his name—"That the salary of the Head Master should be calculated Oα the average of both main and side schools instead of the main school only." Mr Wood had been promised that his salary should not be less than £300, and as the attendance had" fallen "below the number giving that sum under the scale, this was the aimblest way of-keep-ing their promise. Mr Smyth said ifyros the practice in North Canterbury to count the attendance at side : schools; ;Mr Talbot's motion was carried—" Thafc for the future, in computing the salary of tlie head teacher of the Tirnara school the attendance both at the main and rime schools be calcuHated, provided that In no case the salary shall exceed £300." M* Barclay voted against it. Mr Smyth gave notice to move next Board day— ** That in the opinion of this Board it is desirable that the Education Act should be amehded so as to enable the Education Boards to appropriate one or more scholarships tenable at Lincoln Agricultural , College, and that the members for the district be requested to bring the matter under the notice of the Minister of Education; and to use their best efforts to get the Act so amended," ','.'".'
