Floquet's Income Tax Bill by a large majority. FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT. New York, January 17. A passenger and goods train collided on the New York and Ohio Railroad. Eight persons were killed and many injured. OPIUM SMUGGLING. Vancouveb, January 17. A British war ship captured a number of Chinese engaged in smuggling opium. from British Columbia into the United States. Received January 17th, 1 p.m. PROFESSOR TYNDALL AND MR GLADSTONE. London, January 16. . Professor Tyndall, in an article on political topics, asserts that the reckless conduct of Mr Gladstone with regard to the Irish question has increased to an enormous extent the difficulty of dealing with social and political problems in the colonies. THE RUSSIAN ARMY. St. Petersburg, January 17. The Novoe Vremya states that among other measures it is understood to be the intention to raise the effective strength of the R issian army on the German and Austrian frontiers. Received January 17th, 1 p.m. THE COSSACKS. Paris, January 16. It is stated that the Cossacks, bound for Obok, wish to found a colony in Tajurah Bay.
STANLEY AND EMIN. Brussels, Januavy 16. A letter has been received, addressed by Stanley to a native chief, confirming previous reports, dated August 17th, of the safety of Eiuin Pasha and Captain. Casati, the Italian traveller. A DUEL. Paris, January 16. M. Rochfort, editorof L'lntran&igeant, insulted M. Agary, another Communiet. A duel with swords followed, and both, men were wounded. REFUSING TO BE "NOBBLED." London, January 16. Mr J. Greenwood, until lately editor of St. James* Gazette, asserts that Bismarck attempted to " nobble " the paper, and he resigned because he was not allowed to pursue an independent policy with regard to Germany. Mr Steinkoff, who recently purchased the paper, denies that Germany has any hold over it. Received January 17th, 9 p.m. NEW GUINEA. London, January 17. The Colonial Office have purchased the steam yacht Merry England, 350 tons, for service on the coast of New Guinea. DUNEDIN EXHIBITION. The British Commission have decided that they cannot comply with the request of the promoters of the Dunedin Exhibition that the English pictures now at the Melbourne Exhibition should be sent on for exhibition at Dunedin. Received January 18th, L3O aan. THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS. London, January 17. The reported arrest of " Jack the Ripper" arose from the extraordinary likeness of an Englishman named Gray (who had just arrived from Tunis) to the alleged author of the Whitechapel horrors.
THE NATIONAL MORTGAGE AND AGENCY COMPANY. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand has declared a dividend of five per cent.
