HAGLEY PARK.
The matches advertised between the picked teams fell through, owing to the non-appearance of a number of the men chosen, only about thirty turning up. As there were not enough for two games, the Lancaster Park Club, who were in the majority, challenged the resc. vv heatley, captain of the " World," won the toss, and sent the L.P.C.C. to the field, where they remained the whole afternoon. Reese and W. Ogier went in first to the bowling of Cuff aud Labatt. Ogier was bowled in Labatt's first over, and Cotterill succumbed two balls later to the same bowler. Caygill was bowled by the same bowler two overs later. Ashby then came in and soon began hitting the bowling about, Reese keeping up his cricket at zo. Ashby was bowled by Cuff, having scored 23 out of 23 by pretty cricket. Reese 3 was the next wicket to fall. He only made 6, but played a good defensive game, w h»e the bowlers weie well on the spot. VV hite and Barnes carried the score on to about 50, when Cuff got one past White, who retired for a carefully got 9. Cohen joined Barnes, and the two made a good stand, Cohen eventually being caught off a bumpy one from Hassall. Barnes ana Bayner rapidly increased the score, till Barnes skied one in the deep field, and was well caught by Forsyth. He played a fine innings of 32 without a chance, included in his score was a magnificent cut for 5. Atkinson did not add to the score, and Garrard put one up in the slips after making 10. W. Frith now joined Kayner, and the stand of the day then took place. The batsmen treated all, however, alike, hitting them all over the field. Off two overs they scored 24 runs off the bat and one wide. At call of time both batsmen were still in, the score being 219 for ten wickets. Bayner 75 (not out), and Frith 39 (not out). Rayner's innings was perhaps not one of his best efforts, for he was missed several times, but he settled down towards the end of his innings, and gave a rather good exhibition of cricket as it should be played. His score comprised two os, six 4's six 3's, five 2's, and thirteen singles. Fiith's 39 was made without a chance, and he was very severe on the loose ones, while he played the good ones with care. He is getting into batting form, and if he sticks to it will bat as well as he did the year the Canterbury team went to Melbourne. THE WORLD. First Innings. T. Reese, b Cuff .. .. ». .. ° W.
