CURIOUS CHARGE OF WIFE DESERTION.

WELLINGTON. December 28
A warrant,- under the hand of theCbristjhurch Besident Magistrate, has been in the hands of the police of the colony for the last twenty months, for the arrest of a man named George Stokes on a charge of having deserted hie wife and family ou the Ist of April, ISS7. Following up information received from Christchurch, Detective Chrystall arrested a man in Wellington, and learned that he bad lived in this city for nearly the whole currency of the warrant. Application was made at to-day'a sitting of the Magistrate's Court for a remand of the prisoner to Christchureh. Stokes stated that he had beea in regular correspondence with his wife, and had repeatedly urged her to join him in Wellington. He had a borne for her, but as her sons were in situations in Chrktehurch, she preferred to «tay with them, l'he S.M. granted the remand applied for.
