KALAPOI BOROUGH SCHOOL.

The annual prize distribution at the Kaiapoi borough schools took place at 2 p.m. yesterday in one of the main rooms, in the presence of a number of the parents and others who had assembled to witness the prize giving, as well as a presentation from the pupils to Miss Mary Hiatt upon her resignation from the teaching staff. The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Moore, presided, and the majority of the Coniinilteemeu were in attendance. In his opening remarks the Chairman referred to the progress of the Institution and the confidence which every one had in the ability of the teaching staff. With some kindly advice to the children he then gave out the prizes. The present roll number of this school is 520, and fifty gained attendance prizes, who had 110 c been absent on any half-day during the year. Prizes given by the St. Andrew's Caledonian Society of Kaiapoi for highest marks in class —Standard lIL, Edith Richards; IV., Frank Robins; V., Kate Kendall; VI., Grace Moore. The prizes for gymnastics were given by the teachers, the special for good conduct was given by Mr W. Bean. Each child in the Infant's School received a book or a Christmas card. The Caledonian Society's !>rizes were awarded by Mr W. Fraser President), who believed the Society would make the prizes an annual aflair. He announced an intention of privately t giving a prize for boys and girls respec-' tively gaining the highest number of points for general proficency at the next examination. Hearty cheers were then given for the donors of prizes. On behalf of the scholars Miss Grace Moore read an address, accompanying the presentation of a handsome silver breakfast cruet to Miss Hiatt, who had as a teacher been engaged at the school for five years, and had recently resigned her position as matron ot the infants' department. On behalf of Miss Hiatt, Mr Alexander, Head Master, acknowledged the gift, thanking the children, and expressed to the parents his own regret at losing.the services of an excellent teacher and assistant in his work. Mr Alexander gave an excellent address to the children, and the proceedings closed with the National Anthem. The amount taken at the concert on the previous evening was £27.
