ALLEGED ROBBERY ON A RACECOURSE.

At the Ashburton Police Court, on Saturday, Edwin Forward was charged with stealing a £1 note from J. W. Primmer. The evidence for the prosecutfon was that Primmer was on the Ashbarton racecourse on Thursday, and as he was standing with a £1 note in his hand, which he intended to invest in the totalisator, Forward snatched the note.away and ran off. Accused was arrested as he was going io- the direction of the totalisator house. Mr Cuthbertson, who appeared for the defence, brought evidence to show that Forward had agreed with Primmer and two others to invest £1, but after Forward had given Primmer his five shillings the latter appeared to be in an unfit state to make the Investment. Forward therefore took the £1 out of his hand, and was making in the direction of the machine when he waa arrested. The Bench in dismissing the case said there was no evidence against accused. The £1 was evidently the joint property of Forward, Primmer, and two others, and accused had taken it from Primmer for the purpose of placing it on the machine. Primmer had evidently token a little more than was good for him, and had no very clear recoltion of what really did transpire.
