THE SACKVILLE WEST EMBROGLIO.
— SOME PRESS OPINIONS. [per press association.] Received November 3rd, noon. London, November 2. The Times, in a leading article upou American politics, says that Preeident Cleveland's recent actions hi ye rendered him unworthy to again receive the exalted position he now holds. In most scathing terms the writer proceeds to point out that with regard to the British Minister at Washington both President Cleveland and Mr Bayard acted with unmanly and undignified haste. The abruptness of the United States Secretary's proceedings in the matter are characterised as an insult to England, deliberatelj perpetrated for election purposes. It is clear, the article contends, that Lord S. West's recall had been demanded simply as a dodge to secure the support of the Democrats and Irish and the anti-British vote generally. New York, November 1. The Herald declares the action of Secretary Bayard is hasty, and unbecoming his dignified office. lc urges his dismissal from the Secretaryship of State. Received November 4th, 6.20 p.m. London, November 2. Mr Henry Herbert has been appointed to the charge of the British Embassy at Washington during the absence on leave of Lord Sackville West. The Imperial Government have refrained from interposing in the dispute between Lord Sackville West and the United State* Government pending the election for Presidency.
