Melos, with Derby weight up, had the assistance of Wycombe and Australian Peer for a mile and a half gallop, which was completed in 2min •fcisec. Abercorn and Cardigan did a similar journey in the same timeEnsign, associated with Plutarch) strode over the Derby distance in smin 50|sec. Touchstone bushed along fo r a mile and a quarter in "itniu 20sec, while Phaon and Pasha registered 2min 7feec for nine furlongs. Thunderbolt and The Jewel have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. Received October 2Sth, 12.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, October 28. At Tattersall's last night Chicago was backed to wiu the Melbourne Cup at all the money in the market at 100 to 10, after which 8 to 1 was the best offer about the Caulfleld Cup winner. Malua is also being well backed, and 1000 to 80 has been takm about his winning. Layers were, however, willing to go on at that price without finding any acceptors. For the blue ribbon Carbine still maintains pride of position, and 2 to 1 against him is taken and offered. Melos is qnoted at 3 to 1, and outside these two 8 to 1 is laid on the field. Volley is not without supporters, but backers are standing out for 10 to 1 against the daughter of Musket and Lady Vivian.
