RIFLE SHOOTING.

CHRISTCHURCH RIFLE CLUB. Oα Saturday afternoon the Christchurch Rille Club opened their new season with a Handicap Sweepstake, open to all comers, using the Snider rifle, and a sweepstake for thoae using the Martinis. There were twenty-five entries for the first-mentioned match and five for the latter, the conditions in each being seven shots at 200, 300, and 500 yds, one sightef allowed at each range. Although there was a very cold fc>. VV. breeze blowing all the afternoon, the shootists managed to enjoy themselves thoroughly, and pat on some good scores. Mr James Gray, with his medium, made the grand total of 89 out of a possible 105, thus winning the Snider match, and Mr Bashford, with the respectable score of 83. won the Martini sweepstake. Appended will be found the scores of those who made over an average of "Magpies." During the afternoon Colonel Lean paid the Club a visit on the range and fired a few shots at 200 yards with a Martini f making very good average shooting, notwithstanding that the rifle was perfectly strange to him. He expressed himself highly pleased with the arrangements for promoting ride shooting, and said that he was fully convinced of the great amount of good the Club .had done to volunteering in Cbristchurch. Oα Saturday next the Club fire a handicap match: for a long Snider, and for the following Saturday it has beeu arranged to challenge the Reserve Corps to fire a friendly match, which should be a good trial of' strength between the Sniders and Martinis.
