THE POINT RESOLUTION COMMISSION.

[VSSSS ASSOCIATION TELJCGBAM.] AUCKLAND, Octobers. A Boyal Commission of Enquhy inte the circumstances under which certain land at Point [Resolution, Auckland, wa* taken by the Government for defence perI poeee, and a portion re-cold, held its first i Bitting at the Harbor Board offices to-day. The Commissionera were Dr. Giles, E.M., and Colonel Boberts. Mr E. Mahonoy appeared for Mr and Mrs Kissling, who awe ultimately connected with the matter. - The first witaeas called was Thomac Maokay, Land Purchase Commiesioner, who deposed to being sent to Auckland to endeavor to settle an action for trespass brought against Government by Mrs Kiaaling, lessee of the property which is the subject of the enquiry. An - Act was passed in the House enabling Government to take land under the Public Works Act, providing for compensation, and when asked for an opinion witness etated that he considered £1250 would be fair compensation, Hβ had recommended Government io take the whole of the land and lease the house and grounds. His reason for ■ making this suggestion wan that there was a loop line contemplated to be constructed on the Auckland and Penrose line, which. - would necessitate a tunnel running between the battery and the house. Th&t would of course have been a subsequent ' cause of compensation. His other reason for ?*nOripg the suggestion waa that he had an idea that there was too little land ■ 4 taken for defence purposes, and that it was possible it might be found necessary to take further land. Witness did not mention this proposal to Mr Kisaling. W. S. Cochrane, Secretary to the Church of England General Trust Board, deposed : to the Board having accepted the offer of the Government of .£632 for their interest in the land. The Commission then adjonrnel until Monday next. ■ ._
