COURTENAY ROAD BOARD.
TO THE EDITOR OF TEE PRESS. Sir, —As the oldest settler in the district of Kimberley, dating as far back as 1851,1 feel at liberty to correct some statements made by Mr McClennand in a letter on Courtenay Road Board matters. I can distinctly say that before any fences or roads were made no flood-water found its way into the Waimakariri anywhere near Mr McClennand's farm. The only place where any water did so was down the chasm at Bleak House; below this all flood channels carried the water in a direct line for Lake Ellesmere, and, to my certain knowledge, there were several flood channels (one carrying a large body of water) running through the land now occupied by Mr McOlennand. Therefore, his statement that there are none on his land is not correct. I feel sure that if proper openings are made where fences cross these channels, and means are taken to pre Tent flood-water flowing down roads, that the damage will be prevented, and at a very small cost to the Board. I am sorry to notice in the concluding part of his letter that he suspects the employes of the Board of writing the letter signed "The Other Side of the Question." He must surely know that employes cannot reply, and, therefore, this is not a kindly act on his part. May I add one word more? In a letter signed "Ratepayer" the Board is twitted with having erected a wire fence to stop ieed-water. Has *' Ratepayer" any coMBMi sense? Can be not see that the fence is ptaeed on top of a dam to prevent stock breaking * down.—Yours, &c, DttMJW MACFARiASTE.
