RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.
This (Thursday) was an unpleasant morning tor training operations, a fair gale of N.W. wind blowing across the course. Still, as usual, Ted Cults was out early, and he sent St. Clair and Lorraine two rounds at a strong pace. Both horses moved well, and if Lorraine stands on his legs nothing else can win the New Zealand Cup. Ravenswing beat British Lion in once round fast, and Golden Crest did do. to Parvula. Water Bat and Tit did six furlongs as fast as they could go. HalfGuinea, in a mile spin, did not like the work at the finish. Vandal did a real good gallop twice round. Dunkeld and Helmsman were companions, and had a couple of rounds at a steady pace. Malignerdid long slow work, and of Webb's lot Springston and Ruby did not go fast; neither did Enchantress. Piper sent Sultan twice round, the rate of progression being not extraordinary, and Catamount did a few spurts. Idalia went once round, the last half-mile being at her top speed, which isn't much. Count d'Orsay, Alcinous and Chelsea did moderate work at a fair pace. Sykes beat Rosebud, as he should do, in their work. Ray had his team going along, Merrie England licking the Charity colt. Chain Shot and Son-of-a-Gun went two rounds, and the bay was a bit better than the roan. Exchange and Engagement did useful work, as did Tarantalus, Bewi and Mikado, bat Alsace decisively put down Savoy over five furlongs, and the Nautilus filly beat Lord Aston. Of the outsiders, Marmion jumped his hurdles badly. Enchanter and Lyttelton did a fair round, the former having the best of it. The others working were Moss Rose, the Bribery filly, Northcote, Cypriot, and Flatter, and they all did useful work. He&mix.
