THE HANMER PLAINS BOOMS.
TO THK EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir, —I can assure your correspondent that I . wish very much to visit Hantner Plains, and intend doing so as soon as my duties will allow mc to leave Christchurch. Meanwhile I should be much obliged to anyone who would carefully notice the time between a boom and the following shock. This is, of course, best done by a seconds watch, but counting seconds will make a fair approximation. The observers should be as many as possible, and in all parts of the district in which the booms are heard. The observations should be written down at once to avoid mistakes, and after a dozen or two have been noted, with their time, they should be sent to mc. The name of the observer should ba stated, as well as the place where the observations were made, .and it should also be mentioned whether the interval between boom and shock was taken by watch or by counting. As these time observations might turn ont to be very important, I hope that many persons will help mc ; but I also hope that each person will be very careful to be accurate, for inaccurate observations would not only lead to erroneous conclusions, bafr they would also spoil the results which might be obtained from the accurate obaerratioi>> If an observer is not sure, let him wrMe down nothing.— Yours, Sec, F. W. HUTTON. Canteibuiy College, 2nd October.
