"With reference to the Customs revenue I telegraphed early last month that tht authorities were not disheartened at tin relatively small receipts for July, as the reaction after speculative clearances in an ticipating increased duties had to b< allowed for, and I also stated or authority that it had been ascertained that an exceptionally sniaL proportion of the usual shipments oi spring goods had then come to hand ; bul that the arrivals expected in August would probably bring up the revenue tc fully the estimated rate, if not higher, This has proved quite correct. The August Customs have realised .£136,000, which is .£16,000 above the proportionate estimate, thus putting August among th€ best months on record. There is considered to be every reason to hope that the revenue will continue to keep up well, a≤ the early summer goods will shortly be arriving, and these are likely tj be very heavy this year.
