THE WRECK OF THE COLONIST.
GKA.VE CENSUBE BY THE COEONEE'S JUEY. [press association tejleoram.J WELLINGTON, September 2. At the inquest yesterday on the body oi Captain Bayley, of the schooner Colonist, Chas. Burne, the only survivor of the wreck, gave evidence, the particulars being the same as already telegraphed. Evidence was adduced that the signalman reported to the Harbor Board that a vessel was in distress, and that, had a steamer been sent out on receipt of such information, possibly the lives in the vessel might have been saved. The jury found a verdict of " Accidental Death," and added the following rider—"That we are of opinion that there was ample time from the time the vessel was reported flying signals of distress to have rendered assistance by sending a steamer from Wellington. We find that gross negligence was displayed on the part of the harbor authorities or others, and we recommend that a strict investigation be held in the matter." None of the other bodies came ashore. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 1. The Colonist, wrecked at Wellington, is said to have been the schooner which took the refugees from Poverty Bay to Auckland after theTe Kooti massacre, in ISO'S.
