The Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Friday, July 20th, were as follows;— Spirits, £196 1& ; tobacco, £110 &; cigars, £20 6s; wing, £»1 l e ; t«a, £3G 12s 9d: sugar, £45110s ; goods by weight, ££t IDs; ad valorem, 9s; primage, £109 12s 10d; other duties, £23 14s. Total, £J^J7s7-d.
Since oar last report appeared a slightly improved tone has prevailed in the import market, no doubt caused, from the fact thai tbe trade bare lieid oJTfrom buying 03 account of the increased duties aad unstttltsd stale of quotations. The direct stoam liner louie arrived from Loudon via way ports with & considerable cargo for thin port, many which come to a good market. The Grst shipment of new season's teas has come to hand by the S.S. Taiyuan from Foo Chow, aad for the short time- that has elapsed since musters \rere received fair sales have passed. Rice and sugar by this vessel have been placed at late quotations. The market continues bare of kerosene, and the non-arrival of the J. D. Peters from Dunedin is putting importers to considerable inconvenience. Tobaccos meet with a fair business at agents* rates. Candles see usual sales; Nationals, Belmont, Louden sperm* wax, &c., with extra duty added. The local manufacturers have advanced the price of pepper by Id per Ib. Holders of vestas are firm at the advanced rates. Lea and Perrin's and Mellor's sauces meet with usual demand. Carrauts are iirm, and holders will be obliged to ask a longer price shortly. sell at ordinary rates. A heavy line of, J.D.K.Z. Geneva, small contents, has been placed on account of a firm now retired from business, the price being satisfactory to the purchasers.
