[press association telegrams.! AUCKLAND, July 20. At a meeting of the Board ox Education to-day Mr Theo. Cooper moved a resolution providing- that the staff and salaries of teachers of Public Schools of the colony be based upon a uniform scale, and that no child who has passed the Sixth Standard be allowed to attend the Public Schools. He also submitted a scale for the reduction of salaries and amended regulations of the staff, by which head teachers' salaries would range from £350 to .£6OO per annum, and those of first assistants from .£2OO to .£IOO, according to the number of children in the schools, second and third assistants being paid .£75 and ,£SO per year respectively. Mr Cooper claimed that by this means and by amended regulations of staff of teachers a saving of .£75,000 per year would be effected. The motion was discussed at great length, and eventually ita further consideration was postponed for two months.
Brown, who attempted to murder Warder Kutherford, has been committed to the Avondale Asylum a3 a lunatic. The City Council solicitor has been ordered to prosecute Messrs Hellaby for. a nuisance which has been complained of at Ponsonby. The nuisance originates near Hellaby's slaughter-house in the borough of Newton, but offensive smells have spread to the Ponsonby ward of the city. NAPIER, July 20.
At the inquest on a fire which occurred last Tuesday morning, when three small shops in Hastings street were burnt down, an open verdict was returned. WELLINGTON, July 20.
The Magistrate dismissed the charges against the Agnews, remarking they were of a trumpery nature. Henry Anderson, a well-known journalist, died this morning, aged fifty, of cancer in the throat. DUNEDIN, July 20.
Principal Grant lectured to a crowded congregation in Knox Church last night. He urged reciprocity with Canada, cheaper postal and cable rates, and strengthened connection with England. Some time ago Elandorf, fruiterer, was arrested at the Bluff on a charge of obtaining goods by false pretences. When brought up in Dunedin the charge was withdrawn. At a meeting of creditors today his deficiency was shown to be .£256. The creditors not only recommended hie discharge, but one of them collected subscriptions in aid of the bankrupt from the others.
