THE ASSAULT ON AWARDER. THE PRISONER INSANE.
[from our correspondent. AUCKLAND, July 19. Warden Kutherford was able to break the force of the blow by throwing uphii hand or his head would have been smashed. As it is, tho bones at the top of the nose an fractured and the brain injured. The convict, Jno. Brown, is a negro, and vat arrested on January 4th, 1885, on a charge of having shot at another negro named Thomas Brown, in Darby street. The two men had been in Frank's restaurant,and were perfectly sober. Jno. Brown left first; when Thos. Brown came outside ho was met by Jno. Brown, who shot him in the breast. A second shot missed its mark, while the third entered his aide &s he ran away ; a fourth shot was fired after him, which failed to have any effect. Jno. Brown was tried at the Supreme Court and was sentenced to seven years' penal servitude. He had served three yearjs and seven months when he committed the the assault. During his incarceration at Mount Eden his conduct has been ezem* plary, and he has never once been reported lor "breach of the regulations. Shortly after his admission to gaol he exhibited symptoms of? a mild form of insanity, bat was not considered dangerous. Dr. Whit* L*on saw (jaolier Weston to-day, and reported
