FIRES.
[press association telegram. J AUCKLAND, July 19. A fire occurred at Newmarket this morning, -when the C. Goodwill and Co., ironmongers, and J. E. luipy, fruiterer, were destroyed. The premises belonged to Mr J. Osborne, and were insured for £500 in the New Zealand office. Goodwill's stock was protected by policies of ±'450 in the Royal and .£SOO in the Equitable oflice. The North German office held a risk of .£IOO over Irupy's stock and furniture. The total damage is estimated at over £200.
A young girl named Mary Sullivan suffered serious injuries to-day through her dress catching lire while she was engaged in the kitchen. But for tho prompt action of Mrs Williams, with whom she is living as servant girl, she would have been burnt to death.
BLENHEIM, July 19. At 2.30 this morning a cabinetmaker's place, belonging- to a Chinaman, was burned down. While this fire was going on a fire broke out in a four-roomed houne a quarter of a mile off. An extraordinary circumstance attends the latter fire. Tho occupier was accidentally found in a backyard gagged and bound hand and foot. He said „c had been overpowered by two burglars and bound, and left on the kitchen floor while the men, after setting fire to the place, decamped. The story has caused tremendous excitement, but is only half credited. The insurances are .£IOO on the building in the Union, and .£4O on the furniture in the South British. In the Chinaman's case there is a policy for j£GO in the Equitable.
Later. A quantity of furniture and stuff were found planted in the Wesleyan church grounds. Documents were found on Longman proving he had just come from Masfcerton, not Melbourne, as he said. He was arrested just before noon.
