A match between the Australians and Eleven of England began at Stoke yesterday. The colonists went in first, and though the wicket was sticky and did not play at all well, succeeded in scoring 242. McDonnell was highest scorer with 52; Bounor, 38; Blackham, 2_ ; Jarvis, 18 ; Worrall, 35; Ferris, Si); Lyons, 20 (not out), -'lowers took four wickets for 52 runs, and Pougher four for 84. Owing to the wonderful bowling of Turner, who proved perfectly unplayable on the -treacherous wicket, England were all out for 28 in their first innings * Heath 11, Scotton 9. Turner secured nine wickets for 15 runs. In their second attempt England was little more successful, obtaining 79 ; Scotton, 20; Richardson, 15. Ferris took six wickets for 35, and Turner four for 33. The Australians won by an innings and 135 runs. Received July 19th, 11.40 p.m. LONDON, July 17.
The: first of the three matches between All England and the Australian Eleven was begun at Lord's yesterday. Abel aud T. C. O'Brien re-placed J. Shuter and Attewell in the English team, the latter being unable to play, and Boyle and Lyons stood oat of the Colonial Eleven. Woods, an Australian bowler of much promise, now in residence at Cambridge, made his first appearance with the Australians. Continuous rain on Sunday spoiled the wicket, and the game resolved itself into a contest between the bowlers on either side, good batting being out of the question. In the end Turner and Ferris proved too much for the Englishmen, who were beaten by 61 runs. McDonnell won the toss, and determined to take advantage of the first use of the wicket before it got cut up. When the Eaglishmen went in, Briggs alone was able to make any stand against the bowling, and except his 17, which was obtained by good cricket, Grace's 10 waa the only double figure score. With 03 to the good the Australians began their second inninp-s, but the wicket by this time waa completely in favour of the bowlers, and they were all disposed of by Lohmann, Peel, and Briges for 60. Turner showed some defence for his 12, and towards the end Ferris hit out pluckily, and added 20 to what promised to be a very small score. All England had thus I'M to get to win, but only succeeded in obtaining half that number, and the Australians consequently won by 61. Ferris and Tamer bowled throughout unchanged, and were admirably -econded by Blackham, the Victorian wicketkeeper, who was in brilliant form, as he stumped four batsmen, and not a single extra -was recorded. The fielding of both sides was first-class all through. At the conclusion the crowd, who numbered about 20,000, insisted on each of the Australians appearing, and cheered them uproariously.
