SHIP ON FIRE.
NARROW ESCAPE OF THE CREWi ONE BOAT MISSING. ■ [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Received January 17th, 12.45 p.m. Sydnbv, January 17. 'The American ship J. •*__ Berry, bound from Philadelphia to Japan, •took fire at sea on the _9th inst. The -fire spread over the vessel so rapidly that" the crew had barely time to escape, which : tl_ey did in two boats. One of the boats, containing the captain, mate, .and,twelve of the crew, was picked up by a passing vessel, and lasfc night were towed into the heads at Nambucea River, 341 miles north of here. The occupants of the boat suffered great hardships and encountered very rough weather before being picked up. The second boat, .which had eleven men on board, ,
is missing, but it is thought probable that they would make for New Zealand. Received January 17th, 10.10 p.m. Sydney, January 17. The pilot steamer has been despatched to search for the missing boat belonging to the ship J. T. Berry.
