Serious bush fires have been raging in the country districts causing great damage to property. The loss in sheep is also very great. It is believed that a woman has been burned to death.. MUNICIPAL RETRENCHMENT. Melbournr, January 17. The Municipal Corporation have decided to reduce the salaries of their officers. M. PASTEUR AND THE RABBITS. Letters received from Paris state that M. Pasteur is satisfied that chicken cholera is the best means of eradicating rabbits, and that he intends to send a consignment of microbes to the Australian Governments with instructions for its use. M. Pasteur states that the inoculation requires the greatest care, and the rabbits only live a few hours' The microbe is fatal to hares and opossums, but will not harm sheep or kangaroo. Received January 17 th, 2.43 p.m. THE MINING "BOOM." Sydney, January 17. The White Rock Silvermining Company, Fairfield, has been floated with a capital of £1,000,000. The amount was subscribed twofold. The proprietors get £150,000 in cash and £450,000 in paid up shares. Leases are being taken up in all directions. POSTAL CONFERENCE. The Postal Conference opens on Thursday. THE BELGIAN EXHIBITION. Adelaide, January 17. The South Australian Government have declined to grant a vote in aid of the Belgian Exhibition. THE PACIFIC CABLE. Melbourne, January 17. Owen Jones, one of the Board of Directors of the Pacific Cable Company, sailed on the 16th December for Australia, to arrange the terms on which a cable should be laid across the Pacific, and on what basis Canada and the colonies should subsidise it. THE EDINBURGH CASTLE. The attempt to float the Edinburgh Castle has for the present been abandoned. The vessel is, however, intact. Received January 17th, 10.40 p.m. LARGE DIVIDEND. ' Sydney, January 17. The Commercial Bank of Sydney has declared a dividend of 25 per cent. MURDER OF A DAUGHTER. Brisbane, January 17. At the City Court, Burrett, charged with the murder of Emma Burrett, has been committed for trial. Accused admitted that deceased was his daughter. THE: CHARGE AGAINST A MAYOR. Another charge of forgery has been preferred agaiust Rotter, the Mayor of Rockhampton.
