MINISTERIAL MOVEMENTS.
♦' ■ — On Saturday morning the Hon. Minister for Defence paid a visit cf inspection to the defence works at Ripa Island. The party accompanying the Minister in eluded Hon. Colonel Brett, Majors Newali (District Adjutant) and Slater. Captain Hume (Inspector of Prisons), LieutJohnston (Adjutant Ist Canterbury Battalion), Captain Taylor (in command of the Permanent Artillery), Mr IL Beetham, 1t.>1., aud Mess— J. .Tovce, M.K.R., anel ;A. !«'. U. Rhodes, M.11.U. On arrival at j Ripa Island, the two breech-loading Arm-stroup-s and the utiicr ilttint-sof tliedcfencc works were inspected, Captain Tavior, with Sergeant-Major Wardoll and G.P.O. Gulliver explaining the working of the various guns. &c. On returning to Christchurch the Minister for Defence, who is also Minister of Justice, inspected the -Adding—ll Gaol anil thu Police Depot, when lie was accompanied by the Hon. ti. Fisher. The polk-i- force, under Mr Inspccteir Pender, were ou parade during the visit of the Minister.
During the day the Hon. G. Fisher paid a visit to tha miuiicip.-il buildings, and expressed himself highly pleased with the arrangements and lmildiiig itself. Th«"—iuisti-rs- left on Saturday evening for Wellington, where they will meet in Cabinet.
