It is reported that payable gold haa been discovered at the Upper Waihou, Hokianga, on the land of llokiapatuere, and that assays have yielded 3oz to the ton. Chaafe and J. St. Clair, of tho firm of Brooking aud St. Clair, waa found dead in his bed this morning. The deceased gentleman had been suffering from Inns' disease. WELLINGTON, January 14. A little girl, the daughter of George Gaskin, residing at Taranaki West, met with her death by falling on the point of a pair of aheep3hears, severing her jugular vein. The local Naval Brigade entertained the seamen of the squadron at a ball last night. Whilst a squad from the Nelson was practising at the butts here yesterday a splinter from a bidiet struck a seaman named Sampson (who was engaged marking) in the left eye, destroying the sight. Sir William Fit—terbert will attend the Centennial demonstration in Sydney on the 2Cth instant in his capacity as Speaker of the Legislative Council, and will—.press to the Government of "New South Wales the regret of the New Zealand Government that no Minister for this colony can be present. A sailing race between boats belonging to the squadron took place in the harbor yesterday afternoon. A cutter from 11.—.5. Diamond won easily, the Nelsoa's boat being second. The squadron will weigh anchor at eleven to-morrow, and at noon they leave for Sydney direct. To-day the weather is delightful, and thousands of people have visited the warships. The Nelson and the Calliope are the two vessels which attract most.attention. GEEYMOUTH, January 15. The Kaikorai School Commit too intend moving for au injunction preventing the Board from putting a new teacher in charge. At the inquiry Sir Robert Stout will represent the Board, and Messrs Denniaton, Kettle, and Wilkinson the Committee.
