LIVE STOCK, &c Messrs Matson and Co. re_K>rt on.the live stockmarkets,--c.fpr t^w-^kendnig Thursday, December Ist, I Kp -In point of numbers yesterday s . sheeg market was the smallest of J^ « c fc r limited entries for several weeks past though the differcnee was brought-about by the falling off in store !««»«*£. {™ r tfian in butchers' sheep. °* _th___t-.ie thc number to hand was as for the last fortnight, i.e., there was ibopt two-thirds of an. average entry, the nualitv as of late, being somewhat un--vcn. 7 Th- -.commencement of freezing no-rations has again taken place, or. if on the point of doing so, but wh____r this had any direct effect upon vest-rdays market we are not prepared to __T_____i*h_ it is that the sale opened •__th a more buoyant feeling than it has Slow*-, to some weeks, competition being kee__fr __fd B priees for the an upward tendency. Although iard_. maintained throughout, S the average was on late transactions, due, m ourjninds, more to the three or four small markets that™?have had consecutively than on this occasion to any outside demand. On accost of Mr G. Weqdotethe best shorn wether mutton tip to 2d per lb, other descriptions 3__t lambs—A large entry, though not as excessive an one as we have seen tnis season. Notwithstanding this, prices failed to improve; in fact for any but the test lines business was more in favor of buyers than hitherto. Choice lots brought -from 7s to Bs, an exceptional pen or two to fis 9d, inferior to medium 4s to_-s. Of store sheep there were less offering yesterday than for some weeks past, but despite this iact and the abundance of feed that there is the country, buyers were Zery cauti°us in their biddings, and nothing like a rise S -_-lues «,uf be established. Several lots of sheep were withdrawn during the sale, and in others exchanges made as -tnder : — Fresh - conditioned crossbred -wethers of large size a. 7s lOd,.two and four-tooth mixed crossbreds at 4s 3d ana Is 6d, shorn hoggets at os 3d, inferior crossbred- in the wool at ss, well-grown'hoggets at 8s _d, merino lines, 4s Od to os> Od, &c. Beet was in somewhat full supply and •varied in quality, though quite up to tho average in the latter respect. This branch of trade was certainly the worst feature of the day's sale, competition being very dull, and the supply in excess of the demand. As a result prices were marked by a still further downward tendency, quotations for good beef ranging from Ms 6d to 19s per 1001b; medium quality, 16s upwards. On account Mr Jas. Hayward we sold 8 steers at from £o 10s to £617s 6dj steers, account Mr P. b. In stores there was more business done than for some weeks, especially in good tines of three-year-old steers, most_ of which on offer changed owners during the day For various owners we sold between _» and 100 head of this class of cattle at valu-sranging-rom £5 to £5756 d; younger ages, mixed sexes, and aged cows at current rates. The demand for store pigs still continues brisk, and high prices are paid for anything in strong useful lines. .From.-all sides we hear enquiries on the ■part of dairy farmers for pigs to consume their waste food, aud this year the latter is no doubt universally plentiful, owing to the low, in fact we may say ruinous price of butter. _ lhe totals yarded for thc day comprised <fc<» sheep, 440 head of cattle, and 13s) pigs, of which our entry comprised 20_9 sheep, 227 head of cattle, and 60 pigs, for Mcsscra C. Canterbury Horse Market—At Tattersall's on Saturday last our entry for the day comprised 102 horses of various sorts, the major portion of which, however, were Of a light description. As yet, however, Wfr can record no improvement whatever ia trade, last Saturday's transactions being jdnll throughout and low pricas thc general order of the day. For draught or plough horses there is comparatively little demaud at present, and in this class it is very difficult to effect clearance at owns.* ■valuations, moderate though these are for t_»most part. Whether the approaching .harvest will alter the* state of things in this respect remains to be seen, but cer__dn it is that business is stagnant at tho present time. * Wool, .Sheepskins, HtMa.**, I-_itgh Fat, and Tallow—At the Canterbury Wool Stores on Thursday we held our weakly sale of the above. The New Zealand Loan and Mer-cas-tle Agency Company, Limit.;-**, ra•nort on the produce market for tho week ending Friday, the Ist December, ISS7. as follows:—Total yarded at Metropolitan Saleyards, Addington, 30th November:— , Steep. G3-5- s cattfe, 440; pigs, 139. Fat I sheep—Only a moderate number penned, consisting almost entirely of shorn sheep. The demand *was fairly active, both exporters and the local trade operating. Though without any actual advance in prices the sale opened with more spirit than of late; but grew slack towards the cud, and ■quotations remain- unchanged. Shorn .mutton mad- l|d to 2d per lb, the number of unshorn sheep being now quite nominal. We sold for Mr J. A. Randall, mixed crossbreds in the wool. 10. lid and 10s 3d; shorn ewes for Mr E. Store Sheep—A fair supply to hand, and a good enquiry manifested. Prices denoted no improvement, and iv several instances withdrawals took place. For Mr A. E,. Saunders we sold small shorn hoggets at _s Id; shorn two and four-tooth crossbreds * brought os and ...as 10d, and-do do fourtooth, in good condition, _s 6d ; good hog- I JK-ts, in the wool, realised 8s sd, aud aged shorn merino ewes 9d. Fat Cattle ■*- A ite&vy entry and a dull sale, values all sound undergoing a definite drop of 10_ to 19s per head. With.theLongbeach cou«rigS__-_-, account Mr John Grigg, we as -Lsoal topped the markets his prime heavy bulloe__i making 47 10s to £9 10s; lighter sorts, J_sl7s tsd to £S 10s; and heifers, £5 3_ Od to _S i2s G. • ft* jrarchasers being

Ta vender, heifers at £3 ss, £3 15s, and £4 15s, being 16s to 19s per 1001b, according to quality. Store Cattle—The entry comprised a fair proportion of wown cattle in good condition, and with the present plenitude of grass there is naturally some demand for hkcly sorts, though Values do not show any material improvement. We sold for Mr Malley good forward-condi-tioned heifers £3 12s, and mixed eighteenmonths cattle for Mr M. Wheeler 40s; good forward steers fetched £5 ss. Pigs— A comparatively small entry, and late prices were fully upheld. Heavy weights realised 80s a piece. Private Sales—Our transactions include 600 half-fat crossbred wethers and 250 freezers at current rates. Pigs were in active demand, and brought full values. Cattle sold well. Fat cows made £5 5s to £6, and two-year-old steers £3 os. We sold cattie for Messrs Wm. Gabbie and R. Mcllraith. Dunsandel sale, on 28th ult., was fairly attended; and the recent improvement in the yardings quite maintained, but business was slack. We sold forward mixed woolly crossbreds 9s 6d, shorn ewes with fair percentage lambs made os 6d, and a few young cattle changed hands at current values. At Ashburton County Saleyards, 29th ult., there w.fe moderate entries, including about SOOO sheep, chiefly stores, for which there was a good active demand. Mb F. C. Tabart reports on the live stock market for the. week ending Ist December, as follows:—The total numbers of stock yarded at the Addington yards comprised 6365 sheep and lambs, 440 head of cattle, and 139 pigs. Fat Cattle— A full entry, and quite in excess of trade requirements, consequently a drop of 10s per head had to be accepted to effect sales, and even at that depreciation several lines were turned out unsold. Best bullocks made from £7 10s to £9 10s, medium weights aud quality £5 15s upwards, cows and heifers from £4 15s to £6 7s Gd. Store Cattle—A fair entry, with an improved demand, especially for forward conditioned steers of good ages, which description sold up to £5 ss. Dairy cows are without any improvement in values. Fat Sheep—The entry was a small one, but quite sufficient for all requirements. There wa3 a few pens bought for freezing purEoses, the bulk of the entry being absorbed y the trade. Best pens of crossbred made 9s, 9s 6d, 10s 10s 6d to 12s for one pen of very superior crossbred downs. Fat ewes made from 7s 6d, Bs, Ss 6d, 9s to 10s for a line of heavy weights. Merino wethers from (5s to 7s 6d for the best quality. Fat Lambs were in over supply ; best quality pens made up to 8_ 9d, but the bulk of the en cry ruled from 5s to 6.. 6d; inferior, 4s. Store Sheep—A fair entry met with a better enquiry, and a good clearance was eifeoted. Crossbred hoggets made from Gs to 8s; mixed two-tooths, 5s to 7s; merino ewes, 3s Id, and in the wool up to 5s Od. ' Pigs were again in fcood demand andsold freely, especially healthy stores. Messrs Bennetts Brothers report on the live stock market for the week ending Thursday, December Ist, as follows:— At the Addington yards on Wednesday the entries of all kinds of stock were fairly g00d—6385 sheep, 440 head of cattle, and 159 pigs—and the attendance of those interested, about up to the average. The fat cattle on offer -were of various degrees of quality.and weight. The demand, from a not very numerous attendance of the trade, was dull, and a slow sale took place, with a drop in values. From 18s to 19s per lOOlbs was about the ruling price, steers selling at from £5 to £9 10s; heifers from £4 to £7. We sold a fairly heavy entry, as follows:—For Mr James Stark, very prime heifers at £7 per head; for other clients, 7 fat cows, £4 to £5 2s (Id: 11 steers, £0 12s 6d to £7 per head: 5 heifers, _". 15s to £"> 2s Od per head. CORN EXCHANGE, I

ITho Corn Exchange report for the week ending Friday, December 2nd, 18S7 :— The firmness noted In the London market has had the effect o. creating an enquiry

. for wheat. Business, however, has been lof a very limited character, chiefly owing ;to the paucity of space on offer. Intercolonial trade is pretty well at a standstill. 'Reports from the other side speak exceedingly favorably upon the probable yields, "and feed is also very plentiful. Wheat—The firmness noted in the London market has made holders firmer in their .demands, but present values ore not likely to lead to much business until there is more freight on offer. We quote Tuscan and Pearl at 3s 3.\d to 3s 4d, and Hunter's 3s 3d to 3s 3id. Second quality is dull at 3s Id. Chicken wheat, whole, 3s, and broken at 2s 8d to 2s 9d.

Oats—A slight local enquiry has been noticeable for prime short feed at Is 8d to 2s BJd, and Danish at is 7d to is 8d; other long kinds at is 6d to Is 7d. Milling are not very plentiful at Is 9d to Is lOd. Barley—No business in the absence of stocks.

Beans—Market bare, with but little demand.

Peas have an occasional enquiry for feed lines at 2s 8d to 2s 9d.

Grass Seed—No enquiry. Prices nominal at 2s to 3s.

Cocksfoot—Stocks are becoming low, and prime heavy seed is worth 4Jd to 4£d; in' .rior, 3d to 3jd. -'otatoes—Local sales continue at 12s to los at country stations, but the requirements are becoming very small. Dairy Produce —These markets are unaltered. The favorable spring all over the colonies for grass has reduced our export trade to almost nil.

The above prices are those paid to farmers, and d.d. f.0.b.. sacks extra.
