ALLEGED INCITEMENT TO ARSON.
AttheßesidentMagistrate'sCourtyesterday, before Mr R. Beetham, R.M., and Mr H. J. Hall, J.P., Charles Christian Somers, a bookseller, &c, carrying on business in High street, Christchurch, under t-he style of H. J. Wood, who has already been committed for trial on a similar charge, was charged with having, on April ISird last, solicited and incited Thomas Fredk. Farley to feloniously set fire to his shop and the stock therein situated on the South road, Timaru.
Inspector Pender stated that the accused ] had only been arrested on the previous afternoon, and as the principal witness lived at Oamaru, the police now asked for a remand. Mr Stringer, who appeared for Mr Wilding, offered no objection, but asked that' accused might be admitted to bail. Mr Beetham asked what was the position of the accused. 41 Inspector Pender said he was well off. He had a large business. . Mr Beetham said he would double the , bail at present taken, that was to say, the accused would have to find two additional sureties in £200 each. : ; The former sureties were accepted in this case also. ' • • Accused was then remanded till November 15th.
