RICCARTON NOTES.
Though it was mild enough early yesterday morning, akeen cold wind was blowing over the course at 7 a.m., when most of the horses were coming on the ground for their gallops. The tan track was in fair order for going along the two stretches of the course, but round the turns animals galloping had to be steadied a bit. If there was nothing very startling done, yet a good amount of useful work was got through, and in some instances the nags went fast for that portion of their journey that they were on sound ground. Mont dOr and Mistake went two miles on the tan, and, in fact, all the work was on that track. Water Queen ran smartly round, jzoing kinder than usual. Lorraine and Crutchtield covered over two miles at good half pace, and were succeeded by Nelson and Torrent, who got over the same distance at a strong pace, doing a good gallop. Red Ensign and Bronte finished fast the latter part of a once-round exercise gallop, and if the half-brother to Nelson began more slowly than his companion, he finished the stronger and faster '. of the pair. Teredo and Engagement had '. a single turn at a steady pace. T. Sheenan sent Tornado and Erin-go-bragh a spin in company, while The : Painter was exercised with a Quamby ] three - year - old. O'Brien's Rose and ] Black went better than she has been < doing of late with Isaac, and the three : companions Sextant, Hermitage and Gipsy i King put in a couple of circuits, during I the accomplishment of which the pace ] varied at times. The two-year-olds Vandal j and Carbine bad a smart once round, the < pace for nearly half way being strong, i Butler's Artillery and Tit Bit went i round twice together at average speed, ; and Repose, with Stretford up, worked 1 single-handed. Moonray, who is much t admired, went freely enough in sound ' exercise, and Secretary did a gallop, i Patrician was accompanied by Credulity, < but the latter pulled off after two miles, i and the little chestnut rogue went on for < i another turn, finishing very strongly, i Sultan and Leon did strong work together, • I the black colt having the best of the I one-eyed one. Ravenscraig and Der | wenter were also sent along at a i j good pace, while Meteor, Wakatipu, j ! and Kimberley did moderate work. Moana , made his appearance, ridden by O'Connor, < but I only.Baw him canter, and Chain Shot < was as usual not extended, but confined to i walking and trotting. Webb brought out j his trio, and the two chestnut brothers j worked together, and when I was leaving { the course, H. Lunn made his appearance {i with h is string of jumpers. I i Hermit. I,
