SALE OF LORD A. LOFTUS' EFFECTS.
[from ocr correspondent.] [By Telegraph from the Bluff.] SYDNEY, August 22. An announcement which for some time has been appeoring In the daily Press, stating thot a choice selection of sterling silver ond electro-plated ware, oil paintings, Dresden and Worcester china, antique bronaes and linen, the property of Lord Augustus Loftus, ex-Governor of New South Wales, was to be sold at auction under the direction of the mortgagee, drew a very large number of people on Friday to the rooms of Messrs Mills ond Pile. The great attraction appeared to be that almost every article bore thu crest of his Lordship. The most of th«* articles offered were excellent in quality, ond the sale wis carried on briskly, while in many instances the prices realised were high. Among scores of beautiful ond highly valued pieces disposed ot the most noticeable in the varied collection were some presentation pieces to the Governor ond a magnificent electro-plated table centre ornament, with two ten-bght eondelobro and epergne. These latter articles cost originally over £300, and were disposed of for under £100. A solid silver boars head inkstand on a marble stand, bearing the following inscription, was sold for 5s lOd on ounce:—" Presented to Lord Augustus Loftus by the members of; his mission, in token of their affectionate respect. Vienna,
December, 1860." There was also a silver cake basket, weighing about 100 ounces, presented to Lord Augustus on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his weddingday, by the 10th Hussars. Other articles were generally believed to be presents which had been received during the exGovernor's diplomatic career.
