DEATH OF AN OTAGO PIONEER.

[By Telegraph.]

[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.! DUNEDIN, August 19. Mr C. H. Street, who died at Auckland yesterday was a very old resident of this part of the colony, where he has cry many friends. He was one of the early settlers in the Warepu district, arriving in the colony about 1853. He afterwards gave up farming, and removed to Dunedin, where be occupied the position of accountant in the Provincial Treasury. He resigned the office in 185!), and joined the late Mr Robert Gillies in business, under the title of Gillies and Street. He withdrew from this business many years afterwards, but his name remained in the firm, which was then known as Gillies, Street, and Hislop, Mr Walter Hislop being admitted as a partner at the time that Mr Street withdrew. About ten years ago Mr Street removed to Auckland, where he has" since resided. He was a shrewd and reliable business man, and distinguished for his rare common sense. He could never be induced to enter public life, but those who had occasion to seek assistance from him invariably found him ready with his purse and advice. He was for many years Superintendent of Knox Church Sabbath School, which was, under his control, a most flourishing institution. Mr Street was a keen yachtsman, and held a master's certificate. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Mrs Robert Gillies, of this city, to mourn their loss.
