It is expected the general eleotion will be concluded within a month from the present date. Received January 22nd, la.m. In the Legislative Council to-day Mr Barnes, the New Colonial Treasurer, took his seat on the Government benohes. Tbe seats of Ministers were declared vacant. A deficit in the budget of £250,000 has been announced. Both Houses of Parliament granted two months’ supplies. Sir Henry P&rkes will explain the policy of the new Government on Monday next. Received January 22nd, lam. POSTPONED. Sydney, January 22. The intercolonial cricket matoh, New South Wales v Victoria, was postponed owing to heavy rains. THE NEWTON OUTRAGE. The prisoners who were arrested in connection with the Newton outrage were brought up at the Police Court to-day. The case for the proseoution broke down, and the prisoners were consequently discharged. Received January 22nd, la.m. THE SMALLPOX OUTBREAK. Melbourne, January 21. The President of the Board of Health has written to the Government, urging the establishment of a federal quarantine station. The smallpox patients at Sorento are progressing favorably. No fresh caies are reported.
