INSTALLATIONS.

The installation of the Mayors of the various muai ripaKtfes took place at soon yesterday. CHKISTCHUKCH. The Conned! met* at noon. Present— The Major (presiding), Cn. Louisson, McLaren, Prudhoe, Boekisg, Brice, T*it and Bawman. It mc reaolTed that the next meeting of the Council be held on Wednesday, December Z9ih. The Mayos said the object of the meet-; ug was the installation of the Mayor, which would be a merely formal act. 1 he Mayo* then vacated the chair. Cr. Louisaoir said-as sarer Councillor he had the pleasure of re-installing the Mayor for the ensuing year. Ttough he had been an opponent of the present Mayor, it yet afforded him great pleasure to perform the ceremony. A majoiity of the ratepayers had re-elected the Mayor; he could assure him that* bo far as the Council and himself were concerned, they would accord him eTery support. Had be known that the present Major was intending to come fotward he would not hare come out ass candidate as he had no desire for office. He might cay that having learnt from good authority that the valuation of the city would be much reduced this year, the Mayor and Council would hare to exercise great economy. However, he thought that with the experitnee of tee Mayor they might hope to get through the year satisfactorily. The Mayob said he desired to thank Cr. Lonisson and the Council. There was no donbt the year upon which he was entering would be one of difficulty, but with be West Coast Bailway in course of construction he thought brighter days were in store for them. With reference to the late contest, that bad he been Mk:d to sign the requisition to Cr. Louis eon, he would have done so, and would not have been a conteitut for the seat. He was, he might say, rather driven into the contest. He had been challenged, and had to take up that challenge. This was the reason he had been a contestant for the office. The proceeding! then terminated.
