STRANGE AFFAIR AT WELLINGTON.
AN INTERRUPTED DUEL [press association telegbam.] WELLINGTON, December 15. A dnel which t"?o Italians bad arranged to fight at Newtown to-day was interrupted by the police. Ihe principals in the projected hostile meeting were named Perotti and Gamoniei. The latter is a suitor for the hand if PeroUi'e daughter, but his attentions and intentions are obnoxious to the young lady's father. It is supposed that in epite of paternal ob? jeetions Gamonisi had been pressing his suit with the fair Perotti, thence the present trouble. Knives were to te the weapons used, and Island B»y was the spot selected for the combat. Perotti is estd_ ta have provided two knives, but a hitch then occurred in the arrangement?, for Gamoniei, distrue'ing his intended foe, and beiog anxious to ensure fair play, insisted upon a witness being found. Matters stood thue when Constable May appeared on the scene, but Perotti had by this time made himself scarce, and has bo far kept out of view of the guardians of the peace. In order to prevent bloodshed when the men meet again, Constables Stewart and May are keeping Gamonisi nnder surveillance.
