A VETERAN SOLDIER.
[PRBSS ASBOCIATIOH TSUMBAK.]' ' WELLINGTON, September 13.' - The first claim to be considered bjij&e Old Soldiera Commueion will be 4h*t'et Thomas Moody, formerly Sergeant in the Imperial forces. This veteran, who is. sixty years old, has had a career of exoep* tional interest. He enlisted in the ledfea Army in 1848, and served lor ten yeah* He was present at the battlee of Moodkee* Ferozeshur, Sobxaon, Bamnuggur, Ohilliaawallah, and Goojerat, and received th» SutlejiandPunjanbmedabi. Hβ then volunteered into' the 18th Light Dragoons for the Crimean War, and took part not only in the operations along the Danube, bat ia - the battles of Alma, Inkeraiaa.Toheiaaya, and other engagements. He was in the- " Charge of the Six Hundred,* and though, wounded, was fortunate enough to be pwsent at the crowning episode of thews*, the fall of SebastopoL These servipea procured him the Crimean modal with four clasps, the medal for' distinguished conduct in the field, and also the French and Turkish war medals. On parade' aft Portsmouth Moody wae congratulated by the Queen on wearing more honours than any other man on parade that day. Hethen volunteered to the Brd Dragoon Guards for India, and fought through tie Mutiny until discharged on a pension ct ashilling a day, on account of his wounds, with another medal added to his already, numerous decorations. Notwithstanding hie arduous experience of active warfare* Moody enlisted in Sydney, whither he had emigrated, when s call was made for soldiers to serve against the Maoris in New Zealand, and was appointed to the 2nd Waikato Begimenr. At the termination of the Waikato war he received a grant of land in that district, which he quitted to join the forces on the outbreak of the later Maori wan. Hβ wae present at a number of engagements in various parts of the North Island, and, in all, served twelve, years in the colonial forces. The vttanuf trooper has now preferred a claim to have his original grant (which, in some way, he seems to have lost) restored to him.
