The Public Petitions Committee reported on the petition of Messrs Mcßse, Humphries and Bird, who set down their losses by the eruption at JB4OOO, je2QQ«, and £10 respectively, that while tie Committee do not consider that parties who have snffered losses owing to a voleanio eruption have any claim against the colony for compensation, still taking, into consideration the fact as shown by the evidence that the petitioners would ' have been able to save a considerable portion of their property on the day immediately after the eruption' had they devoted their: energies to that object*, instead of saving and endeavoring to save life, they recommend that their case receive. favorable consideration of the Go- • vernment when putting a sum on the Estimates to relieve snfferers by tho recent ealamitfeev (VbOX OUB OOBBBSrONDHNT.J WELLINGTON, July 18. With reference to the - voleanio disturb- ' aneeß, Mr Laraaoh has received a telegram stating that Professors Brown and Thomas have been addressing meetings of Natives at Bdtorua, and endeavoring to allay their fears. It is considered improbable that there will be any further disturbance.
