J _ ' ■' ' ' Last night Mr Arthnr Hazawl, brother of the late Mr C Hazard, and Messw Percy and Leonard Bobineon returned from an expedition to Wairoa, via Kartoriria, bringing back the clothing of the Hazard family; the eetUere , buHooks and the Natives' cattle* They took three horses and a pack horse, with-shovels to die out the horses when bogged or to cfcar land slips. They found flte Eaiteriria track as bad aa that by Tikitapu, landslipe and avalanches of mud threatening to precipitate -them off the narrow track Lake Botokakahi into the lake. They slept m the Bunanga house, Wairoa, on Friday night, but owing >to the violent earthquakes got little sleep; running outside at every shock. They had*, terrible journey, taking twelve hours to: reach Botoroa. Fortunately the rain clouds did not break over Wairoa but were oarried northward, or they would have had to abandon their horses and find their way on foot to save their lives. Aβ it was. they had to dig out their horsee twice, the suction of the mad being euch that the horses could their feet They ;have no intention of returning for more goodts as the experiment after yesterday's considered too dangerone. The pattle brought out would have died in a day or two, having been reduced to gnawing roote of tree*. The patty leportthat: strange Natives from the inland eettlemente had come down to Lake Botokakahi in oanoes, and were p'nsderißg Mcßae'e and Humphxiea' stores, clearing out .blankets; clothine, Ac. Mr Mcßae had information that £2000 worth have gone, and comparatively little is left save come quantity ofjtms of ealmon and eardines; £100 worth of hotel linen ie gone. Some of the plunder, it is stated, is being carried away to the Upper Taupo. The Hazard party found twVNatives lying drunk in Mcßae'e hotel, having broken into the spirit cellar. Other Natives had seized the remainder of the stock of liquor and carried it away. Co* stable Cavanagh left tonday for Kaiterina to intercept the plunderers as they came beck from /Wairoa by Lake Botokakahu Hβ recovered JB4O worth of goods at Kaiteriria, the Natives bolting. _ The weather being fine, Captain Way, with a party of five mounted men and pack-horses, left this morning- to try and penetrate to Wairoa via Kaiteriria tore? cover the moet valuable portion of hie effects.
