At a meeting of the Hospital and* Charitable Aid Board, e> letter vu received from Mr Graham, Believing Officer, who expressed regret at being; obliged to bring under the notice of the Board the urgent necessity existing for.eomething being done to provide employ-■ ment for e> very large number of perron* • of various descriptions who ere totally ata locs to provide for their families front' want of employment, and were dependent upon public relief to provide necessary focd to keep themselves and their families from starving. When they called upon him for relief he usually aeked them if" they had applied for employment at the Public Worts Offioe to be employed at the so-called relief works, and invariably received the same reply: "There is no room for employment for them}" ibst . they conld not be set on to work. He read in the public papers that in Dunedin 800 • men were employed on relief works, yet only a very few could obtain relief in Auckland. Mr Mackeehnie thought the question raised in that letter was out ol their province, and wm in the way of the City Council. He Mayor said the Council was in no better position, as they had at the present time more men than they required. He referred to the action of the Mayor of Dunedin in finding employment when those whom he had found wors for struck. Mr Waddell eaid he was not Inclined to follow the action of the Mayer or Danedin.
