Crown Solicitor, to endorse a promissory note for 4200 by means of false pretences, the jury acquitted the prisoner by direction of Judge Gillies, who ruled that the transaction, though a fraudulent one, did not disclose false pretences. In discharging the prisoner, the Judge said the transaction disclosed gross fraud on the part of the prisoner and bis wife. This case closed the criminal sessions. Tbe telegraph chess match between the Auckland and Napier Chess Clubs has resulted in favor of Auckland, so far as played. Two games were won by Auckland, and the rest w«re unftnoshed. GIBBOBNE, Jnly 12. There is considerable excitement in town re the report of oil in the bore of the South Pacific Company. Mr Weaver, mine manager, cat nein yesterday, but declines to give any absolute informatien. The reply to his cable to Sydney for further instructions is eagerly awaited. At Melbourne there is a considerable flutter in shares, which were quoted there at 5s to 5a 6d. On Saturday 6s 3d was wanted here, now holders will not sell for that price. WELLING fON, July 12.

Crossley, indicted for larceny* was also acquitted. INY-BCAKGIL-, July 13. The bouse of John Ball in. Teviot street ws~ burned down this evening. It was insured for £200 in the Norther— Assurance, and the furniture for .£SO in the same office. A considerable portion of the furniture waa saved. Dall was formerly employed on the railway but recently went to Kirn" berley.
