SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING.

FIBST DAT.

[Bt TXLBSB&PH.J [PBOM OUB COBBSSPOHDIBT.] TiMABU,MsyS. The S.C.J.C. Autumn Meeting commenced t>day. The weather was fine, bat the attendance of the public only moderate. The sport was fairly good, the great struggle for the Cap being the finest seen on the course. The following are the results :—

Tixabv Httbblb Back of 80 soys, added to a sweepstakes of 2 soys each for acceptors ; eerond horse 10 soys, and third 5 eovs from the stakes. About two mues. Mr P. Bradley's b m Folly Sat 61b, Mr W. W. Greener , * eh g Trapper list, Mr J. Higgise' eh g S3cretary list alb also ran.

At the fall of the flag Faugh-a-BaUagh rushed to the front, and soon had a lead of several lengths. At the torn into the straight the gelding was still leading, next coming Irish King, Trapper, Polly, and Secretary, Borderman whipping in. On (retting over the hurdle in the straight Polly passed all bat Irish Kin?, and Trapper ran np third. In this order they took the hurdle in front of the stand. Bound the back, Faugh-a-Ballsgh still led, and though Cotton made a game effort, he could not get on terms with him. Turning into the straight for home, Borderman commenced to come through, and reaching Polly about the rails soon disposed of her, and also of Irish King. He could not catch JPaugh-a-Ballagh, who parsed the poet a short neck in advance, a win which was greeted with great applause. Irish King was a fair third, and Polly and Trapper finished fourth and fifth respectively, Secretary being hopelessly oat of the hunt. Totalisatort—lnside, .£153. 42 on tbe winner, dividend £4 ss; outside, .£143, £31 on tne winner, dividend .£4 3a.

DieTßicr Plate, of 40 sovb ; one and a-half mile. Mr Hobbs' b g Melville, by Daniel O'Rourke-<Nancy, 7st 7ib (White) 1 Mr Jefferson's b h Jim Whiffler, Bst 21b „ _ , , , (Blackmore) 2 Mr Dooley'e br g Cicero, 6st 51b

„ „.. , , (Cochrane) 8 Mr Hobbs' b g Jack, 9at 71b, was scratched, and only the ttio named faced Mr Butherford.

After a little delay at the post, caused by Tim Whiffler being averse to joining the other horsee, he got them away nicely. Cicero at once ehowed the way, closely followed by Tim, Melville lying a couple of lengths off. At the back Tim ran up alongside Cicero, and they raced aide by nide to the home turn, where Melville joined them. Whips were then laid on to Tim Whiffler and Cicero, and although the former gamely responded he could not hold with Melville, who answered White's question satisfactorily, and won without muoh effort by about a length and a-half. Cicero was a good third. Time, 2min 54secs. Totalisators—lnside, dividend £1 133; outside, dividend £1 19s.

Tim ABU Cup, of 200 eovs, added to a sweepstake of 3 Bova each for acceptors; second, 25 soys; third, 10eovs from stakes. One mile and three quarters. (Stratford) 3 Mr Cotton's b c Hermitage, Bet. also ran. Mr Pilbrow's bm Mermaid, 63161b, was scratched.

In the absence of any open betting it may be interesting to give the tetaliaator figures of this event, as follows:—lnside— £137 on Captain Webster; i 279 on Hermitage; .£46 on Tit Bit; £73 on Master Agnes. Outside—£llo on Captain Webster; 470 on Hermitage; .£SO on Tit Bit; £65 on Master Agnes. The preliminary canter wer, the machines were eagerly rushed, aad Captain Webster very Boon had s century pat -on him. Mr Cotton's colt was much fancied, owing to the fact that that finished horseman Bob Derritt had the mount,, and next him in favor came ! the game chestnut. Master Agnes. Titbit was tke least fancied, as he looked too light to foot it with the others on auch a heavy course. At the first attempt Master Agnes got away solus, but White soon turned him back. At last they got away grandly, the chestnut again doing the piloting. Passing the stand the first time the order was—Master Agnes, Captain Webster, Titbit, Hermitage. They raced in this order round the bend to the back, when Captain ran up to Agnes, aud Hermitage closed on Titbit. They raced thus pair and pair till the home turn, when Titbit joined the leading pair. At the rails all but Captain Webster were getting punished, but all efforts were fruitless, as the horse named won splendidly by a little over a length, Tit Bit and Hermitage being a very good third and feurth respectively. The race was a grand one from the fall of the flag to the Judge's post, but Captain Webster, despite his steadier of Bst 21b, had a course that suited him all to pieces, and consequently had it pretty well his own way. dividends—inside, £i 4s; outeide, £2 Be.
