' A -meeting of tiie*" Moorhouse Statue Committee was held on Nov; 80; in the ©omain, to consider further the" site of the statue. His Excellency tiie Governor attended; with Major Bodes." There were present—Messra J. Ollivier, H. P. MurrayAyntley, J. Gapes, J. H. Baker, S. Clarkson, Dr. yon Haast, and J. C. Maddisbn, tiie architect who will superintend the erection. "-• *"- r ■"■"•
Hie Excellency wai welcomed by Mr Ollivier and Dr. yon Haast, and proceeded at once to the Bite previously chosen, from which the turf removed. This was opposite the Hereford street gates, and on the top of a slight rise; bnt, on consideration, it was decided to reject it, owing to its being-beside-'the path, and the advantages of a new point behind the sun-dial were examined. This was found , to: offer a site commanding tiie Hereford street entrance, and the. whole length el the path on each side, and after careful considerAtion was unanimously chosen. It >a some ten feet behind the sun-dial, and Che statue mounted on a pedestal will face Hereford street: To add to the space about it, the turfed corners of the lawn at that point are to be elightly rounded off. His Bxcellency kindlyconsented to unveil the aiatuo, aud Tuesday, tho 22nd December, was fixed aa the date of tiie ceremony, in honor of which a holiday will be proclaimed. The time is to be 3 p.m., and special arrangements will be made to accommodate lady spectators. The inscription finally decided on ia—" William Sefton Soorhouse, to whose energy and perseverance Canterbury owes the tunnel between tiie Port and the Plains.'' On one side will be the date of Mr Moorhouse's birth and death, and on the ether the years in which he was Superintendent of the Province.
