ROAD BOARDS

_ Ri:CARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday. Present—Messrs Hall (Chairman), Nunweek, aad Boag. The minutes of the lest meeting wereread and confirmed. Measrs Baker, Hobday, and Armstrong waited on the Board and presented a petition signed by eight ratepayers praying for a footpath along that portion of the Fendvlton road from Colehurst's corner to Captain Armstrong's. The deputation pointed out the great want for a footpath in this pait of the road, and the danger to travellers by the deep drain and the narrowness of the road, and urged on the Board the necessity for come improvement. The deputation having retired, the Board considered the matter, and the following resolution was carried:— That with the existing large Drainage d.fch on the Fcndalton road, the Board regrets not being able to make a footpath, but if the proprietors adjoining will give land to widen the road the Board will form it full width, and make a proper footpath. The following correspondence was read — From Mr Jennings, requesting the Board to gravel a few chains of the footpath on the road through R.S. 357. It was resolved to reply that the road in question not being dedicated to the public, the Board cannot comply with Mr Jennings* request. From MrT. Hall, requesting the Beard to form a few chains of the boundary road between the St. Albans and Ricearton districts. It was resolved to reply that the road referred to was under the control of the St. Albsns Borough Council. From the Christohurch City Council, inviting the Board to elect two representatives to attend a Conference on sanitary matters, to be held at the Council's office on Tuesday, the 9th inst., at 330 p.m. The members present having previous engagements, the Board regretted not being able to send representatives to tho Conference. Copies of the balance-sheet of the W&imakariri River Board were received and ordered to be acknowledged.-. The Surveyor reported that the Styx bridge on the North road was unsafe for traffic, and so much, of the principal timbers being unsound it was false economy to keep repairing it. The Board considered that a new bridge was necessary, and the Surveyor was instructed to prepare plans, with estimate of cost, to be submitted to the Selwyn County Council at next meeting. The monthly report was read and the following resolutions were carried—That the owner of rural section 330 be requested not to remove any more soil from the road ditch adjoining his property, and that the side of the said road be lowered along the edge of the ditch, bo as to make the road of a uniform curvature; that the pipes at the corner of the Bryndwr road be replaced with an 18in timber culvert; that the footpath on the Strowan road adjoining the river be fenced oS to the boundary bridge. The Clerk produced the ratebook prepared in accordance with the Rating Act, which was signed by two members of the Board, and the rate therein transcribed ordered to be levied and collected. After passing accounts, &c, the Board adjourned.
