DRAINAGE BOARD.
The Chrietchurch District Drainage Board met last night at 7 p.m. Prte?nt— Messrs F. H. Barns (in the chair), W. H. Hoekxng, B. M. Taylor, W. Vincent, J. H. Hewitt, 8. Ifnimfqg, and A. E. G. Bhodes An apology was made for Mr F. de c. Malet, who was unable to attend.
The Engineer reported, among other matters, recommending the Board to stake
a small drain from Wall's drain to an accommodation road from the New Brighton road. The report was adopted. The Treasurer reported receipts £807 193 6d; expenditure, £434 17s 10d; Bank overdraft, £12,05114s 3d. Correspondence waa read:—From the Sydenham Borough Council, asking the Board to reconsider its decision as to the size of the pipes to be laid in Colombo street. The letter was received.
From the Avon Boad Board, expressing it 3 willingness to collect the Board's rates for 3J per cent. Received, and the offer accepted. From Oarrick and Co., asking for a statement of facto with regard to the Woolston rates, about which Mr Hopkins was taking action against the Board. Beeeived. Prom Joseph Briggs and 3ix other residents in Shirley, complaining of a nuisance there. Beferred to the Engineer for report. From Mrs Wilson, complaining that since the Board t x>k a strip from her land she was annoyed by trespassers. Sbe asked £25 compensation for the land taken.
Itjwas decided to erect a notice board at the place warning off trespassers. Also to offer Mrs Wilson £20 as compensation.
Mr Dunlop waited on the Board to complain that No. 2 drain was stopped up on his propetty. The Board promised to consider the matter.
The Worka Committee's report dealing with matters of detail was adopted. Tenders for the stormwater drain, Colombo and Montreal streets, Sydenham, were opened, and that of W. Prudhoe for i>l22los accepted. . Mr B. M. Tayixjb gave notice of motion to ask the Government, for the following reasons, to place upon the supplementary estimates the sum of £10,000 for the purpose of relieving the ratepayers of the Christchurch District Drainage Board and Board of Health from their present financial difficulty; that the works carried on by the above Boards had been the means of saving the colony many valuable lives, and reckoning the cost of each immigrant as £18, the mere money saved to the colony must have amounted to .£40,000; and also, that the policy of relieving the ratepayers in certain cases had been supported by the Colonial Treasurer in his speech last session on the District Bailways Bill, and it was hoped that this was one of the cases contemplated. Mr ViNCTOT gave notice of motion— " That, as in consequence of want of funds the Drainage Board is no longer able to! carry out the functions of the Board of Health, it delegates its powers as the Local Board of Health to the several local bodies included in the Drainage District." Accounts to the amount of £1434 17s 104 were passed for payment and the Board rose.
