FIRES.
About six o'clock on Sunday morning a fixe was discovered at the promisee wherein Mm Painter lived and carried on bueineee as general storekeeper and fancy depot at Kirwee. The fire is supposed to have broken oat in two boxes standing at the rear of the house, and through the strong nor , -west wind blowing at the time, the house soon caught, and was razed to the ground in about half-an-hour, Mrs Fainter escaping with nothing on bat her nightdress. The flames were first noticed by a neighbor by < the glare through his window. Had sufficient water been procurable, it is believed he could have saved the boose. The stock was insured for £200, and the bouae for £150, the furniture, including piano, being uninsured. There was a good deal of excitement in the township, and a large crowd soon congregated, but too late to ba of any assist ince. Nothing is known as to the cause of the fire. •

BLENHEIM, June 8.
- The billiard-room and skittle alley of the Half-way House Hotel, Katuna Valley, was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. Tre cause is unknown. Insurances were on the building and contenta in the Soyal for J8230. I*V£RCABGILL, June 8.
A cottage occupied by M. GiUooley, and owned by B. Beynolds, was burned down on Saturday. The house was insured in the New Zealand office for £200. The furniture was not insured.
