A GAOLER'S COMPLAINT.
At the Beaident Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr DohaHson, Chief Gaoler at Addington Gaol, made a remarkable statement. He attended to account to the Bench for the non-appearance of a person who had been r__nded to the gaol for a week's medical treatment, as suffering from delirium tremens. He said the man was raving mad, and he had now no less than four similar cases in the gaol* which more reeembled Bedlam than
an orderly gad. He found that the system of remanding such subjects to the gaol was very sen»_ly interfering with that discipline a< necessary to the conduct ef the establishment. Mr Beetham—Then if the discipline of the prison is Buffering you must get more men. Gaoler—The Government wfll not give mc more men; they are, in fact, about to reduce by one man, the present staff. Mr Beetham— WeU, as Visiting Justice to the prison, I now recommend you to apply, by telegraph, to the Government for more ass—stauce. There is no other place under present arrangements to which these men can be sent, but it is quite clear that the good government of the prison must be maintained. V
