DRAINAGE BOARD.

The Drainage Board met yesterday at 7 p.m. Present—Messrs F. de o. Malet (Chairman), F. H. Barns, W. H. Hoakincr, J. H.Hewitt, S. Manning, E. M.Taylor/ and A. E. G. Ehodes. The Finance Committee reported receipts since last meeting £341 Qa 7d; ex- I peuditure, .£302 10a sd; 1884 rates coliected to date, £19,234 19s, leaving £693 10d 10d outstanding. The Bank overdraft was £12,415 5a lid. Correspondence was read — From the Sydenham Borough Council, to the effect that it had no objection to the Board repairing culverts in Jackson's Creek. The Secretary stated that at a joint meeting of the Council and the Board the former undertook to maintain the culverts within the borough. The Secretary was instructed to forward a copy of the joint Committee's resolution to the Council. . From the Wools ton Town Board, pressing for a reply on the matter of clearing the Heathcote in. Wooleton. The Enineer stated in this matter that he did not think it practicable to call for separate tenders for the work. Decided to reply to this effect. i From the Avon Boad Board, offering to collect the drainage rate for coat of collection, probably 5 per cent. Decided to ask the Board to reconsider the terms, as no other body intended to charge more than 24 per cent. • From the same, complaining that the pipae at the junction of Victoria street and. the East belt were out of order. A note I from the Engineer stated that the drain might very well be abandoned. Besolved tip send a copy of the Engineer's remirka to the Board. ; *r From the Commissioner of Crown Latnfci suggesting that, with a view to obviate disputes about, drain reservations, the Board should ask the Government to insert I in the Special Powers and Contracts I Bill giving the i3oard. power to deal with owners of abutting land. Eeferred to the:■ Worke Committee. From the Drill-ehed Commissioners, praying for remission of rates on the drill* shed. It was decided to refuse the request. . From the West Coristohurch School Committee, refusing to pay rates on the Schoolmaster's house, which had hitherto been exempt. It was pointed ont that the house was not Government property, and the Chairman was authorised to take steps for the recovery of the rates. Tenders for cleansing Avon River, Horseshoe Lake, and Dudley Creek were opened, and that of Mr M. Barry, for .£1177 lOj, wae accepted. For cleaning No. 2 Drain, Mr Coghlan's tender of £77 10s was accepted; and for cleaning the Heathcote, that of Mr W. Hannen for J8577, the surety in each casa to be approved by the Works Committee. The Engineer was authorised to call for fresh tenders for the Preston's Hoad District. Mr John Lee waited on the Board to give notice of a claim ho intended to make for damage received by his son through falling into a hole in Kingsley street Sydenham. The matter was referred to the Works' Committee, and the Board adjourned.
