KAIAPOI RIFLE CLUB.

The third annual prize firing cf this Club took place on the Kaiapoi rifle-range on Monday. Perfect Queen's weather fayoxed tlie competitors, who numbered thirty-one. The arrangements of targets and marking reflected great credit on the Managing Committee, and the baodicape gave satisfaction. The ranges fired at were 200, 400, aud 500 yards, six shots at each, the highest possible score being 72. Befreshmente were provided on the ground, aud tbe firing, which began at 10 a.m., was over about _ p.m. In the evening a number of valuable and handsome prizes were distributed in the Municipal Chamber to the recipients by Mr J. Lowthian Wilson, a Vice-President of the Club. The Chairman referred in congratulatory terms to the result of the day's firing, as well as to the enthusiasm displayed by the members. He had no doubt but the Mayor, who waa President of the Club, would have experienced a great deal of pleasure in being home again in his proper position tbat eveciug. [Hear, hear.} It was gratifying to know that he would return from Australia shortly, and it was generally believed hia mission thither would prove a successful one. [Cheers.] The members would fully endorse hia expressions of approval with the management of tiie day's proceedings. Before him was placed a varied and choice selection of prizes, which the prize-takers, in order of merit, would be allowed to select from, and he then read the list of winners and prizes which were taken -—1, G. Davis; 23, J. Gilmore, 37, pen and pencil from Mr Fraser; 24, C. Wright, 35, eggstand from Mr Winterbourne; 25, T. -Millar, 35, stereoscope and 5s from Mr Wilson; 26, W. Boigh, 27, mot from Mr J. Clark; 27, B. Evans, 25, brushes and sponge from Mr Brooke; 28, C. B. Bichards, 24, 501ba flour from Mrßiatt; 29, W. Becker, 24, teapot from Mr W. B. May; 30, J. Ironsides, 18, pair goloshes; 31, J. Butt, 17, pair boots and ladle. The winners of the range prizea given by the Club were—J. Simpson, 200yda, 21 points; W. Simpson, 400 yds, 22 points; and N. Kidd, 500yd8,21 points. Votes of thanks by acclamation were carried to the prize givers and to the canvassers, and Mr G. Wearing, Hon. Secretary; also, to the Mayor,for allowing the Club the use of the chambers for meetings. The question of arranging with the Commanding Officer of the Eifle Volunteers for the use of tiie range waa considered at length, and the matter waa deferred till the annual meeting of the Club. The usual complimentary vote to the Chairman concluded the proceedings.
