It is expected that this Conference will define the English and German boundaries of New Guinea. Shares in the Anglo-Australasian Land and Mortgage Company, of which Beginald Brett, South Australia, is the promoter, have only been partially subscribed. It is expected that the balance will be taken up by a syndicate. The attempt to float a company for the construction of an ocean dock near Fort Adelaide having failed, the shares are now being offered'privately. February 2. The Archbishop of Canterbury has approved of the ('proposal to create Fiji a Bishopric The death is 'announced of the Bight Hon. Thomas Hagan, 8.P., who was on two occasions Lord High Chancellor of Ireland. February 3. The Western Pacific Conference defines the British and German boundaries of New Guinea. It will meet in London after the Congo Conference has closed. It is rumored that the Duke of Connaught is desirous of becoming Governor of New South Wales in succession to Lord Loftus. Mr Gladstone is said, however, to be unwilling to give him the appointment. The British Government have decided to abandon their intention of annexing the Southern portion of New Guinea. This step has been decided upon in consequence Tsf the Tf6w South Wales authorities objecting to contribute toward the increased expenses which the annexation would involve.

Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General of New South Wales, denies that the British Government have determined to abandon their intended annexation of the Southern portion of New Guinea. He also states that the reported refusal of New South Wales to contribute towards additional;expenditure to be. involved is unfounded.
