VOLUNTEER CONFERENCE.
[FBBSS ABBOCIATIOH TO.SOBAX.'} WELLINGTON, January 8. A Conference of Adjutants and officers commanding several Volunteer districts in the colony met this afternoon at the Government Buildings, and it is expected their sittings will extend over a week. The Conference, which has been appointed at the instance of the Defence Department, comprised the following officers:—Majors Stapp, Wanganui, Butts, Wellington and Napier, and Shepherd, Auckland, and Captains Webb, .Kelson and Weetland, Newall, Canterbury, and Gordon, Otago and Southland. The object of the Conference is to suggest an amendment in the Volunteer Act and Volunteer Regulations, in order to make the latter conform tojthe former as nearly as possible. At present some of tbe regulations are ultra vires, and it is considered very desirable for the proper working of the force that amendments should be effected in them as well as in the Act under which they are framed.
