Monday, Novembeb 17. [Before C. Whitefoord, Esq., E.M., and Montague H. Smith, Esq.] Weights akd Msasubbb.—Mary Taylor was charged with having an unstamped 41b weight; Jano Young with having a
scale, 41b, 21b, lib, $U>, ilb, 2oz, loz and Joz unstamped, it being, however, stated that she seat them by a carrier to Chriefcchurch to he stamped, and they had been adjusted by some one, but not stamped; E. Pickering with having a spring balance unstamped; and (i. H. Blackweil, Fairbank'e ecales not stamped. The last named defendant stated he sent the scale to be stamped, but it was returned, as the Inspector was away; ho was frequently not in Christchurch, and he thought the Act was too severe in dealing with persons whose scales ' might be quite correct as in thi3 case,! though not stamped, and he pointed out the Government should send an Inspector round at regular times to perform the stamping. In reply to Mr Blackweil, the Inspector said h»s district extended north to Hurunui, couth to Bangitata, west to Westland, and east to the sea (excepting Akaroa.) The Bench observed this would include the borough oE Kaiapoi. J. Winterhouse wae charged with having platform scales of a falee balance; J. Davis, scales not stamped. The Resident Magistrate etated lie should consider the cases and give judgment on Monday fortnight.
