SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the. Oust Committee was held on Wednesday, 23rd inst. Present— Bey. N. McCallum (Chairman), and Messrs Hassal, Taliott, and Jones. The master's monthly- report was received and considered, and certain requisites ordered to be procured Correspondence was read from the Board, including Inspector's report on annual examination of the school, and a form to be filled up of school furniture, &c. The Inspector's report was carefully considered, from which it appears that the school passed a 7 most successful examination, close upon 60 per cent, being presented, out of which 93.7 per cent, passed. All the pupils in Standards VI., V., IV., 11., I. passed without a single exception. The general remarks were of a very complimentary nature, showing thorough painstaking aad efficient teaching. Proposed by Mr Hassal, seconded by Mr Taliott, and carried—"That 4 the Committee congratulate the teachers of the school upon the very satisfactory nature of the Inspector's report, and that a cordial vote of thanks be given them for the diligent manner in which they have worked [in the interests of .the school." Messrs Hassal and Taliott were requested to interview certain parents whose children attended school irregularly. Several accounts I were passed for payment, after which the Committee adjourned. A special meeting of the Lincoln Committee was held on Tuesday. Present— Messre Doherty (Chairman), Bartram, sen., Bartram, Jan., Huhnke, Tod, and Greaves. The chief business was to arrange matters in connection with the con-, cert to be held on November 7th, in aid of the prize fund and school treat. Various I subcommittees were appointed to carry Out the details. The Chairman reported that all with whom he had communicated had responded heartily to his invitation to take part in the concert, and that he was quite assured the gathering would prove a great success, both in regard to the musical part and also financially, as the tickets were going off rapidly, and only fine weather was needed to bring all things to a prosperous finale. After disposing of some other small matters the meeting adjourned. A meeting of the Mount Grey Downs School Committee was held on the 27th inst. Mr John Doff was in the chair. The report of the Inspector was read and considered. It stated that the school maintains its high state of efficiency, the children beisir earnest and accurate in their work. The writing was good, especially in the lower department, under Miss E. Willis. All the lower standards passed well, and the upper ones are creditable, both to master and scholars. Per centage of roll—Number presented, 55.4; passed, 93.4. The Committee considered the report highly satisfactory, and requested the Chairman to convey, personally, their best thanks to the teachers. The resignation of the Head Teacher, Mr Thompson, was received, he haying-been appointed to the Brookside School. His resignation, was accepted with regret. The Committee decided to present each pupil that passed a standard at the late examination with a prize, and the infant classes with suitable booke, to encourage them in their work. The Master informed the Committee that arrangementa had been made with an artist to have the likenesses of the teachers and children taken in groups, the work to be done in a few days. The Masons-Flat School Committee met on the evening of the 30th inst. PresentMr James Cowie (Chairman), Messrs J. Little, E. J. Mitchell, Barnes, P. Harris and J- W. M. Cox. A letter from Mr Thomas Hoban was read, charging the schoolmaster (Mr Brownlee) with making erroneous statements regarding the conduct of his children. After hearing the evidence of the children the Committee considered the whole affair of too frivolous a nature to be placed in the minute book. Mr Mitchell proposed and Mr Cox seconded a motion to the effect that the compulsory clause of the Education Act be enforced, and that the Chairman give the parents of absentee children immediate notice of the came. This motion was carried, and tbe meeting «dj;urned.
